A meat delivery truck caught fire while travelling through Sandhill Village in the Belize District this morning at around three o’clock. The truck was heading to Belize City with more than one thousand pounds of meat. Love News understands that upon passing through mile 16 ½ on the Philip Goldson Highway, the back of the truck caught fire. According to a friend of the truck owner, David Redecop, the driver and two occupants had tried extinguishing the fire with an extinguisher but the fire reignited. Redecop told Love News that the team was traveling from Shipyard, Orange Walk to Belize City to do meat deliveries.
David Redekop, Friend of Owner: “That’s my close neighbor. He has a big meat shop and his workers went to deliver and they just passed here in Sand Hill when they saw the truck had fire in the back and they parked. They had a little fire extinguisher. They stopped the fire, the thought they had the fire gone and the tires exploded, the fire came up again so they couldn’t stop the fire. The truck burned with all the meat.”
Reporter: Could you tell me what’s the value of the meat that was destroyed ?
David Redekop, Friend of Owner: “That’s $95,000 of meat.”
Reporter: And what sort of carcasses were in there ? Was it beef, pork, can you tell me ?
David Redekop, Friend of Owner: “There was beef and pork.”
Reporter: So you guys were coming from Orange Walk.
David Redekop, Friend of Owner: “From Orange Walk to Belize City to deliver meat.”
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage have not yet been confirmed.
