Mexican Businessman Detained After US$10,500 Found in Belize

A Mexican businessman remains in police custody after authorities reportedly found 10 thousand 500 US dollars in his possession, money he allegedly failed to declare upon entering Belize.  44-year-old Rafael Moran Gama appeared in the Belize City Magistrates’ Court, charged with failing to present a visitor’s permit when requested by an immigration officer. Gama, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty and was fined one thousand dollars plus five dollars in court costs. He was ordered to pay the amount immediately or serve six months in prison. During the proceedings, Gama told the court that he travelled by taxi from Mexico to the Corozal Free Zone. He said he later accepted a ride to Belize City from another taxi driver and handed the driver his passport at the border. Gama claimed he was sleepy at the time and could not confirm whether the passport was presented to Belizean immigration authorities.  He was later detained in Belize City during a police operation. When his belongings were processed, authorities reportedly discovered the US currency.  The amount places it above the threshold that must be declared when entering the country.  Authorities say Gama must now be interviewed by officials regarding the source of the money, its intended use and his alleged failure to declare it. The cash remains in police custody pending that process. Gama reportedly told the court that the seized money was his only available source of funds to pay the fine. He will remain in custody until the financial inquiry is completed and the court fine is settled. Once those matters are resolved, immigration authorities are expected to facilitate his removal to Mexico.
