The Ministry of Sports is turning its attention to the long-neglected Mexico Sports Center in Belize City, which has remained closed since it was damaged by Hurricane Lisa in 2022. While the facility once served as a major sporting hub after its grand opening in January 2020, it has since fallen into disrepair and restoring it may not happen anytime soon. Minister of Youth and Sports, Anthony Mahler, says his ministry is actively seeking ways to raise the necessary funds to rehabilitate the center.

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Youth and Sports: “We have been looking at that and I’m talking to the Ambassador Arnold to ensure that we get it rehabilitated. We’re working on certain things right now to raise the necessary capital to invest in most of the facilities. Now, when you talk about large capital investments like those facilities need all across the country, the monies that we’re able is just to do some initial work to improve them whereby our people can feel comfortable in going into those facilities.”
For now, the Mexico Sports Center remains unused, with hopes pinned on future funding to bring the facility back to life.
