The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing is warning motorists to exercise extreme caution along a section of the Corozal–Sarteneja Road following reports of significant settlement and flooding in the area. In a public notice issued yesterday, the ministry says approximately two hundred meters of roadway near the south approach to the Pueblo Nuevo Bridge has experienced unprecedented settling, a situation officials believe may have been worsened by tidal flow from a nearby lagoon. MIDH says crews are currently working to fill low spots to keep the roadway passable, and the narrowed section will be clearly marked to guide drivers. However, authorities caution that if floodwaters overtop the road again, the area may be temporarily closed and traffic redirected through San Estevan. Over the weekend, concerns about the deteriorating road conditions were underscored when a taxi van reportedly ran off the affected stretch. Love News correspondent Vince Martinez visited the area and filed this report.
Vince Martinez, Love News: Over the weekend we had flooding in this area where the road was not accessible anymore and a caution was issued out by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing over the weekend on February 22 asking people to take caution when coming around this area because of the rise in waters and the extreme floods that were taking place. Piece of the road was deteriorated and basically under water but as you can see at the moment they have patched it up a bit, it’s passable now but extreme caution is still advised because over the weekend as you can see we had a taxi that had kind of swerved off the road and ended up in the water. Fortunately no one was hurt, everyone was taken out safely and the vehicle had to be removed. So they’re still advising for people to take cation in crossing this road not to speed and just take their time because the water is still rising. We’re out here right now and some vehicles are passing by, they’re taking their time. It seems safe for now but you know we still advise people to take caution because we don’t want anyone to get hurt. So once again if you’re coming from this area whether you’re going to Sarteneja or coming from Sarteneja just remember to take caution on this road.
The ministry is urging drivers to reduce speed, obey warning signs, and avoid attempting to pass through the area if floodwaters are present. Officials are thanking the public for their cooperation as monitoring and remedial works continue.
