Mills attains Carifta swimming 'A' qualification mark

Flying Fish swimmer Jaden Mills established a Carifta Swimming Championship A standard qualification time when he won the 15-17 Boys 50m butterfly on the second night of finals of the Aquatics Sports Association of T&T (ASATT) National Long Course Age-Group Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Center in Balmain, Couva on Thursday night.

The 16-year-old Mills stormed to victory in the 15-17 boys 50m butterfly in 24.70 seconds to better the A standard qualifiction mark of 24.76 while his clubmate Jonathan Sambrano was second in 25.70, and Isaiah Alexander of Marlins, third in 26.03.

World Championship medal winner, Dylan Carter was also in action on the night and booked a ticket to the upcoming Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games when he won the 18 and Over Boys’ 50m butterfly in 23.28 seconds, well ahead of the qualification mark of 24.30 seconds.

It was the second time Carter has set a qualifying time in the 50m butterfly after he touched the wall in winning the 50m butterfly preliminaries in 23.34 on Wednesday’s opening night of competition .

Among the swimmers to attain Carifta B swim marks wer the trio of Zahara Anthony, Serenity Pantin and Katelon Leera in the 11-12 Girls 50m butterfly; Khalil Brathwaite in the 11-12 Boys 50m butterfly; Anthony in the 11-12 Girls’ 100m freestyle; Pantin in the 11-12 Girls 50m backstroke; Micah Alexander in the 11-12 Boys 50m backstroke; Leera in the 11-12 Girls 100m breaststroke; and the quartet of Alexander, Taylan Diaz, Brathwaite and Kamden Williams in the 11-12 Boys’ 100m breaststroke; Anpherne Bernard in the 15-17 Boys 100m breaststroke; Anthony in the 11-12 Girls 400m freestyle; Marena Martinez in the 13-14 Girls 400m freestyle

On the opening night there were also Carifta B standard qualifying swim times from Anthony and Na’Ziya George in the 11–12 Girls 400m indivdiual medley; Martinez in the 13–14 Girls 400m individual medley; Mills and Sambrano in the 15–17 Boys 50m butterfly ; Taylan Diaz and Alexander in the 11–12 Boys 200m breaststroke, and Bernard in the 15–17 Boys 200m breast.

According to the qualification guidelines for each event, the first two swimmers with Carifta qualification will be considered for team selection with over-seas based swimmers also up for selection based on times submitted in accordance with ASATT’s selection process. This year’s Carifta Aquatic Championships in Martinique from April 2 – 9.
