Minister Francis Fonseca Comments on Unearthed Tomb of Caracol’s Founding Ruler

A few weeks ago we reported that archaeologists have uncovered the tomb of Caracol’s founding ruler, Teʼ K’ab Chaak, in what is being called one of Belize’s most significant archaeological discoveries in decades. The tomb, located beneath a shrine in the Northeast Acropolis of the ancient Maya city, dates back to 331 AD and marks the first confirmed royal burial at Caracol in over 40 years. The burial chamber held a wealth of elite artifacts, including jadeite jewelry, a mosaic death mask, eleven pottery vessels, and carved bone tubes, confirming the ruler’s high status and Caracol’s strong early trade ties across Mesoamerica. Love News spoke with Minister of Culture, Francis Fonseca who said that the findings have been quite impressive.

The tomb of the Caracol king, Te K’ab Chaak, was discovered on July 10.
