Minister Francis Fonseca Reaffirms Belize’s Sovereignty Amid Guatemala Dispute

And while the latest Sarstoon encounter again placed Belize’s territorial dispute with Guatemala in the spotlight, Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca used his official Tenth Day address to reaffirm Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Fonseca said the Battle of St. George’s Caye remains an important symbol of Belizeans’ determination to defend their homeland. He also pointed to the case before the International Court of Justice as the peaceful and lawful path towards finally settling Guatemala’s longstanding claim and providing certainty over Belize’s territory and borders.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “For generations, the dark cloud of the Belize – Guatemala territorial claim has hung over our nation. But we did not retreat. We chose the path of peace, rule of law, and international justice. And even today, as we gather here for this important ceremony, that commitment to peace is being tested in the Sarstoon. As our legal team presents our case before the International Court of Justice at the Hague we stand on the threshold of a historic resolution. We look forward with confidence to a future where our borders are permanently recognized, our territorial integrity is undisputed, and we build a lasting era of regional cooperation and mutual respect with our neighbors.”

The written phase of the ICJ proceedings has been completed, but a date has not yet been announced for the oral hearings. Fonseca maintained that Belize remains confident in its case and committed to defending every part of its territory while awaiting the court’s ruling./
