Cabinet Minister Francis Fonseca has weighed in on Tuesday’s walkout by opposition and independent senators, saying their ability to leave the Senate in protest demonstrates the strength of Belize’s democracy. When asked about the protest, Fonseca said senators are entitled to express their positions, even when the Government disagrees with their decision. He argued that the freedom to stage such a protest without interference reflects the healthy democratic environment that exists in Belize.
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “It’s democracy at work. I think we should all celebrate that there’s nothing wrong with that. They decided that they wanted to take that action at that time. So, there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m sure they will follow explaining why they took that action. So, it’s democracy at work. I think all of Belizeans should celebrate the fact that we live in a strong democracy where we have different opinions, you know, serious issues facing our country. So we should respect that and celebrate it.”
Fonseca’s comments contrast with those of Church Senator Louis Wade Junior, who remained in the chamber. Wade said walking out would have meant neglecting his responsibility as a legislator, particularly with the OSH Bill before the Senate. The senators who left the meeting have maintained that their action was intended to register concerns over the BTL-Smart transaction and what they say has been insufficient transparency and consultation surrounding the proposed acquisition./
