Minister Francis Fonseca Welcomes New Coin Designs

Minister of Culture Francis Fonseca has welcomed the Central Bank of Belize’s plan to introduce new designs for Belize’s coins, saying the initiative provides another opportunity to showcase the country’s identity, heritage and national symbols.  Fonseca says Belizean currency is used every day by citizens and visitors alike, making it an important platform for promoting national pride. He says the new coins can serve as small but meaningful reminders of the country’s unique story and the things that unite Belizeans.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “I support that, I think that’s important. We have fantastic national symbols. And as you know, we hardly use the coins anymore. But I think it’s a good, again, I think it helps to build our culture, support our culture. And I think so I certainly support that decision.”

The Central Bank announced the proposed coin designs yesterday as part of its planned modernization of Belize’s currency. The designs are expected to feature images and symbols that reflect Belize’s history, culture and natural environment.  Central Bank is expected to provide further details on the rollout of the new coins, including when they will enter circulation and how the existing coins will be phased out or continue to be used.
