Minister Micho Chebat moves to modernize the Belize Postal Service

As postal services around the world continue adapting to rapid technological advances and changing consumer habits, Belize is taking steps to keep pace. Government is moving ahead with plans to modernize the country’s postal service through a series of upgrades aimed at improving efficiency, expanding the services available to the public, and enhancing the overall customer experience. The initiative also seeks to better position the Belize Postal Service to compete with private courier companies by introducing features that reflect the growing demands of today’s delivery market. Love News spoke with Minister of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics, Michel Chebat, who shared how the planned improvements will reshape postal services for Belizeans.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities: “The Postal Service is probably one of the oldest government institutions in this country and with the digital age a lot of the traction it used to have has rarely slowed down. But what we’re doing at the Post Office we’re moving to the digital age, we’re moving to a stage where people can track their mail, can track their parcels digitally. They’ve also introduced a one-day parcel delivery to compete with the other couriers. And so we’re trying to innovate, shortly along with the UPU we’re going to be creating hubs within the post office where people can do their electronic applications, birth certificates, passport applications, all the government services you’re going to be able to access through the post office. As well we’re creating a portal at the post office for MSMEs, for small business, small and micro businesses, so that they may not have at home the tools that they need to promote their businesses. We are creating this through the post offices.”

Minister Chebat says the modernization initiative is designed to bring Belize’s postal service in line with global trends by streamlining operations, introducing more convenient and customer-focused services, and strengthening the department’s capacity to compete in an increasingly fast-paced and competitive courier industry. He adds that the changes are intended to ensure the postal service remains a reliable and relevant option for Belizeans well into the future.
