Minister of Home Affairs Holds High-Level Review With Police Command in Belize City

Police Minister Oscar Mira spent the afternoon in Belize City today, meeting for several hours with the senior command of the Belize Police Department. The session took place at Precinct Two, where Mira was joined by Police Commissioner Dr. Richard Rosado and several high-ranking officers for what he described as a full review of the department’s performance and internal operations.  According to Mira, the meeting focused on identifying which areas of the policing system require urgent adjustments.

Oscar Mira, Minister of Home Affairs: “Today I met with the police high command getting to know what their concerns are, getting to know what their portfolios are. The high command of the Belize Police Department is doing an excellent job. I wanted to know firsthand what their limitations are and where we want to go. The police department works very hard in keeping the country safe and I want to ensure that we continue with that trend. It’s not an easy job. And today I met with them to ensure that I give them my full support, that I let them know that I’m here to lobby on their behalf. I also want to make sure that they understand that it comes with a responsibility. The police department right now needs a lot of changes. I think that policing on a whole is dynamic and therefore changes must come. Changes will happen for the betterment of the security of our people.”

He noted that with rising public expectations and evolving challenges, the department must remain adaptable, efficient, and proactive.  One clear outcome of the discussions is that changes are coming.  Mira confirmed that a shakeup within the senior command is imminent, signaling the government’s intention to strengthen leadership and improve accountability at the highest levels of the department.

Oscar Mira, Minister of Home Affairs: “We are working with the High Command to ensure that we have the right persons and the right fit persons for the job that they’re doing. As I said, it’s dynamic. Changes need to happen. There will be some changes. I’m in consultation with the Commissioner of Police to ensure that we do positive changes. To ensure that the programs that are happening that they are working and where we need improvement, that we improve.”

The minister also revealed that he will be embarking on a countrywide tour in the coming weeks. The tour is expected to include visits to formations and substations across all districts as he continues gathering feedback, assessing operations on the ground, and engaging directly with officers and communities.
