Minister of Public Service Henry Charles Usher is offering clarity on the government’s recent $1.1 million increase to the University of Belize’s (UB) subvention, which now stands at $8.7 million annually. While the amount falls short of the $10 million requested by the university’s faculty and staff union, Usher says the total financial picture tells a different story. According to Usher, the government’s contribution extends beyond the subvention.

Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service and Governance: “In addition to the subvention government is providing assistance to students which goes directly to the University of Belize’s account. I think the last fiscal year the assistance totaled 5 million or close to $5 million dollars. So in reality, it was close to $12.5 million which was what the University of Belize was receiving directly from the government of Belize, being the subvention and the assistance to students. The increase of the subvention now does not affect the assistance to the students. So you will see an increase there as well. Not an increase, the total amount will be increased. So certainly that is where we have to look at. “
With the new increase, Usher emphasized that this student assistance remains untouched, and overall funding for the national university is expected to rise.
