Minister Rodwell Ferguson is in San José, Costa Rica, attending the Ordinary Meeting of the Central American Agricultural Council. Ferguson is participating in his capacity as Belize’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries and Pro Tempore President of the Council. The meeting brings together agriculture ministers from countries within the Central American Integration System to strengthen regional cooperation and advance a common agenda for sustainable agricultural development. Discussions are focused on food security, climate resilience, agricultural health and greater coordination among member states. Particular attention is also being given to the anticipated 2026–2027 El Niño phenomenon and measures that can be taken to protect regional food production and improve countries’ capacity to respond to its potential effects. Ferguson attended the opening session alongside Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, Muhammad Ibrahim, and CAC Executive Secretary David Martínez. Officials underscored the need for stronger regional integration and coordinated action to confront the mounting challenges facing Central America’s agricultural sector.
