Minister Usher Calls Out PSU Over Public Services Commission Claims

Public Service Minister Henry Charles Usher has called out the Public Service Union (PSU) for circulating what he describes as unresearched and unverified information about the chairmanship of the Public Services Commission.  The comment follows a PSU release objecting to Troy Gabb’s appointment as chairperson, which appeared in the Government Gazette of July 23. Minister Usher says the union should have checked the circumstances of the appointment before making its position public.

Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service: “I guess that the information that was set out was not properly discussed or properly researched. And as has been said in the news, Ms. Gabb was just appointed for one meeting as an interim chairman because the substantive chairman, Mrs Diana Price Murrillo, was out helping her husband who was ill. And we thank Troy for chairing that one meeting. Look, we’re happy to say that Mrs Murillo is back chairing the Public Service Commission.”

Love News has since confirmed that the appointment was for a single meeting while Chairperson Diana Price-Murillo was on medical-related leave. Gabb remains a member of the commission, and Price-Murillo remains its substantive chair.  The union’s objections also extend to Gabb’s continued membership on the commission. The union argues that his public commentary raises concerns about his impartiality, particularly toward trade unions and public officers. It has written to Usher outlining those concerns and says it does not support Gabb’s reappointment when his term ends in November.  For context, the commission is tasked to handle appointments, promotions and disciplinary matters involving public officers.
