The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has confirmed that an ocelot found shot in the Cedros-Granville forest on Sunday February 22, 2026, is receiving veterinary care.
In a statement issued on February 24, 2026, the Ministry said the animal was recovered by wildlife officials and transferred for treatment. Recovery is expected to take several weeks.
The Ministry stated that the ocelot, identified as Leopardus pardalis, is listed as an Environmentally Sensitive Species under the Environmental Management Act. The designation provides full protection from hunting, harm or disturbance.
The Act prescribes a fine of $100,000 and up to two years’ imprisonment for violations involving protected species.
The Ministry said it condemns any action that harms protected wildlife. It is working with the Forestry Division’s Wildlife Section and law enforcement to investigate the incident and pursue legal action where applicable.
The Ministry reminded hunters and members of the public that harming an Environmentally Sensitive Species is prohibited. It urged citizens to review the list of protected species and regulations governing their interaction, exercise caution in forested areas and report suspected breaches to the Wildlife Section or the nearest police station.
The Ministry stated it will continue to monitor the animal’s recovery and follow the matter in accordance with the law.
