Ministry of Health Rejects MICS7 Water Results

The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has joined the Belize Water Services in rejecting the results of the MICS7 Survey when it comes to the water quality and the presence of E. Coli.  The ministry sent out a release today, acknowledging the public’s worries but indicating that its own long-term data, collected from multiple sites across the country, consistently demonstrates that potable water meets international safety standards.  According to the Ministry, Belize’s national monitoring program involves the systematic collection and analysis of approximately 4,000 water samples every year. These samples are drawn from Belize Water Services systems in all districts, rudimentary water systems that undergo monthly and quarterly testing, bottled and purified water operations which are sampled monthly, and the few remaining handpumps still in use. All samples are evaluated using World Health Organization guidelines and other national standards to ensure accuracy and reliability.  The MoHW explained that sampling activities are conducted with strict protocols for collection, preservation and transport, ensuring that results are consistent and credible. Tests look for microbial contaminants such as E. coli, total coliforms and other indicators linked to waterborne diseases. When isolated issues arise, the Ministry says it works immediately with water authorities and municipal partners to implement corrective measures.
