Ministry Rolls Out PCV13 Vaccine Nationwide to Fight Pneumococcal Disease

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has rolled out the Pneumococcal 13 (PCV13) vaccine countrywide, expanding Belize’s disease-prevention program with a key tool that protects both children and adults from dangerous bacterial infections.  Health officials explain that pneumococcal disease, caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, is responsible for some of the most serious illnesses, including pneumonia, ear and sinus infections, meningitis, and bacteremia, a potentially life-threatening blood infection. The bacteria spread easily through close, person-to-person contact.  The Ministry says that a single dose of PCV13 can prevent these infections in individuals 5 years and older. Those at the highest risk, adults 65 and older and people living with chronic medical conditions, are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated.  Authorities emphasize that the introduction of PCV13 is a vital step in reducing severe illness, hospitalizations, and complications linked to pneumococcal infections.  The vaccine is now available at all public health centers and through the Ministry’s mobile clinic services, ensuring nationwide access for families and vulnerable populations.
