Mira Stays Cautious on Budna Case as Pressure Builds

Another burning issue for many when it comes to Home Affairs Ministry is the Joseph Budna saga.  The last thing we heard on the matter was that the full yet empty file was at the Office of the Public Prosecutor for review and determination.  Love News asked Minister Oscar Mira, how he plans to tackle this particular issue as the new Police Minister.  From his response, it seems he would want to keep that matter at bay, for now, at least.

Oscar Mira, Minister of Home Affairs and Enterprise: “Oscar Mira, Minister of Home Affairs and Enterprise: “Speculations and rumors. I think that we must be very careful about speculation and rumors. What I can see on that case is that one, I have not seen the file. I don’t want to see the file. The file has been sent to the DPP and the DPP will be the one to give directions from there. In our laws here in Belize, it is not permitted to have an independent investigation. We would need to change some of our laws in order for that to happen. But for now, the file has been sent to the DPP and the DPP is going to give her directions thereafter. I just got here today. It’s my first day. My first day. It’s my first day and the file is at the DPP. I will not interfere with any investigation that has happened. I will not go there and put my five cents or two cents or one cents in what has happened but as a Minister of Police I respect that it is at the DPP’s office and I will leave it there for her guidance. I have not seen any footage. I have not seen any file. As I said, I won’t interfere with the investigation that has happened or is happening. I will not interfere with what the DPP’s direction is going to be. I don’t want to influence anything. So I will leave it to the DPP for her to give her directions on this case.”

Budna was reportedly taken against his will to the Arenal border with Guatemala and handed over to the authorities on Friday, August 22.
