A disturbing trend of unexplained deaths continues to emerge across the country, with at least four bodies discovered under troubling and unresolved circumstances within the last ten days. Tonight, we focus on one of those cases that has largely gone under the radar, the death of thirty-seven-year-old Jericho Humes of Dangriga Town. Humes had been reported missing sometime over the Easter weekend after he was taken to work on a farm located near Lynam College in southern Belize. According to information reaching our newsroom, Humes was transported to the farm on April 1 and was expected to be picked up on April 7. However, when the farm owner returned for him, Humes had vanished without a trace. What was left behind raised immediate concern. Reports indicate that a cap Humes was known to always wear was found burnt on the property, along with a pot of rice that had been left untouched and had already gone sour. Our newsroom also understands that there were signs of disturbance at the location, including damage to the door and windows. Humes’ body was reportedly discovered earlier this week. By the time it was found, it was already in an advanced state of decomposition. Family members visited the forensic lab today, where they were able to identify him based on the clothing he was wearing. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and investigators have yet to determine exactly what transpired between the time he was last seen and the discovery of his body. Love News spoke with Humes’ brother, who described him as a hardworking and honest individual, now lost under tragic and unsettling circumstances.
Brother of Deceased: “Asking why they don’t want to give us the real information, a certificate for us to start to do something for my brother. I wonder why they don’t want to give us the body. We already identified that that is my brother, my little brother. I wonder why they didn’t call us and tell us they found a body. We are following up when my nephew asked my neighbor that is police so the neighbor told my nephew that they found a body at the village in Hope Creek.”
Police say that a post-mortem examination is pending, after which the body will be formally handed over to the family.
