MoBay cruise past Molynes, maintain four-point lead

Montego Bay United cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Molynes United in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at Stadium East yesterday for their third straight win, which also kept them four points clear atop the standings.

Jourdain Fletcher’s double strike saw off Molynes, who played second fiddle the entire match.

Although happy that his team won, Montego Bay’s coach Xavier Gilbert was not pleased with their wastefulness in front of goal.

“We have to be more ruthless, because Molynes did not offer much today, and at times we were reckless and careless and we didn’t punish them as much as we should have. You can’t create so many good opportunities and not convert,” he said.

He pointed out that the game could have been played out differently if Molynes had scored the first goal.

“We took too long to score and in conditions like this, where it’s raining and you are dominating and not putting away the chances, things could have been iffy with the rain and the conditions not suited to how we want to play.

“It could have been a scrappy game (if Molynes scored first) and and then we are forced to struggle to find an equaliser,” Gilbert said.

Montego Bay had numerous opportunities in the first half. However, Timar Lewis, Dwight Merrick and Owayne Gordon were especially wasteful.

Gordon had the best two opportunities to put his team ahead. The first he fired over from 12 yards after Merrick found him with space inside the box, but he blasted over the top.

Moments later the forward broke inside the box, with the goalkeeper at his mercy, but he dragged his shot wide of the target.

Although they were being outplayed, Molynes created a rare opportunity for themselves late in the half, but Curtel Lawes could not find the target from close range.

Fletcher eventually broke Molynes’ resistance when he slammed a loose ball past Darren Donaie, after the goalkeeper blocked Gordon’s shot in the 45th minute.

Jahmari Clarke and Lucas Lima had easy opportunities to extend Montego Bay’s lead early in the second half but they failed to convert.

However, Montego Bay did get a second goal, when Fletcher broke inside the area and fired a shot past Donaie to make it 2-0.

Even after making a number of changes, Montego Bay continued to dominate possession and create chances, with Okeemo Jones, Clarke and Deonjay Brown all coming very close to a third.

“We were lazy,” commented Molynes coach Jermaine Thomas. “We could have done better. We were pretty much second and third to every ball. We weren’t sprinting as much as we ought to. The conditions made it difficult, but both teams played on it. We could have connected a bit more and we just didn’t do that.”

Montego Bay remained atop the league with 19 points, four more than Racing United, who defeated Spanish Town Police 3-0. Molynes are second from bottom with five points, three more than Police.
