Molynes looking to end JPL season on a high

Molynes United head coach Jermaine Thomas said his team is aiming to finish the Wray & Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season as strong as possible when they face off against Cavalier FC tomorrow at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Molynes will be playing their last match of the season as the Kingston-based team is in contention for the JPL playoffs. They sit 11th in the table with 23 points and are 17 points off sixth-place Waterhouse FC who currently sit in the final playoff spot.

Thomas said despite the team’s low placement in the standings, they will be aiming to get all three points against third-place Cavalier.

He believes a strong finish for Molynes would be a good lesson for the young players in the squad to develop the right mentality and a fighting spirit.

“Yes, that’s the plan. We want to finish as best as possible,” Thomas said. “It is good for the team and also when you’re coaching youngsters in the team, you want to have the right kind of mentality.”

Despite the team’s ambitions, however, Thomas admitted it will not be a difficult task and Molynes will be wary of a ‘dangerous’ Cavalier unit.

In the team’s earlier meeting this season in the JPL, Cavalier ran out comfortable winners. Goals from Jalmaro Calvin, Dwayne Allen and Shaniel Thomas were enough to sink a Molynes squad that was still riding high from their first win of the season.

INTERESTING MATCH AHEAD

“I mean, Cavalier are very dangerous. They have gone to the [Concacaf] Champions Cup this year and they are also competing for second place. So it will be interesting. We lost to them this season and they scored some good goals against us but what we’ll be doing is basically assessing ourselves and looking at them,” Thomas said.

“They play very, very direct, go over the top and run in behind and stuff like that. So it’s just to look and see how we’ll deal with all of that and find the areas in which we can hurt them,” he added.

Molynes will be buoyed by some of their previous results against teams in the league’s top half of the table. They drew back-to-back games with defending champions Mount Pleasant and playoff bound Portmore United and will be hoping to do even better against Cavalier.

Thomas said his players will be committed to the task tomorrow and he is confident they can achieve the team’s goal.

“Guess what, I think our players are committed. We have started something and we have built something here. We went on a run where we hadn’t lost a game for a period, we went to Mount Pleasant and had a good result, we went to Portmore [United] and had a good result. So we managed to foster some good relationships with the players, so we’re thinking that everybody is motivated and have bought into our philosophy and our plans,” the Molynes coach said.
