Molynes United looking to consolidate JPL spot

1 week ago 7

Having flirted with relegation over the past two seasons, Molynes United head coach Jermaine Thomas said their goal for the upcoming Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season will be to consolidate their place among the nation’s best.

Molynes have finished 11th and 12th respectively across the past two seasons, just above the relegation zone.

In fact, the club had pulled off a daring escape last season, surviving relegation on the final day by virtue of Humble Lion’s 4-0 defeat to Mount Pleasant.

As he prepares for another season at the helm, Thomas said the goal this time is to ensure the team can avoid being drawn in another relegation fight.

“It is up to us to make sure we survive and stay up and to really be competitive,” Thomas said.

“We want to make sure that we can play in Premier League for the next seasons to come. It is all about putting together a good competitive team and make sure we can play Premier League football next year.”

It will be a much-changed Molynes United this year as the club has been active in the transfer market.

Several familiar faces have departed the club, most notable being striker Peter McGregor, midfield engine Jevaughn Brown and Daniel Hardy.

With new arrivals settling in to take their place in Thomas’ squad, the head coach is looking forward to the season’s start.

“We have been working. We started a bit late but we have been putting in the work, the guys have been responding well and we’re grateful for that,” he said.

“They have been settling in well. They have surprised me in terms of how quickly they have settled in and we have managed to merge between the old and new players. I’m thinking once we can continue to work on that, then it shouldn’t be a problem going forward.”

COACHING STAFF

Molynes’ new additions have not been limited to the team’s players, but their coaching staff as well.

The club has welcomed former Reggae Boy Wolry Wolfe into their coaching set-up as one of their assistant coaches.

Thomas welcomed the appointment, stating that Wolfe will bring a wealth of new ideas to the team’s tactical structure.

“Wolry is one of those young bright coaches who I think have a wonderful future ahead of them and I think his ceiling is high.

“It is now for him to seize the opportunity, add what he can add to the team and learn as much as possible at this level. He has had several experiences playing locally and abroad and national experience as well.”

“He added, “So for him, coming back and doing his coaching badges, it will only add value to us.”

Molynes will open their JPL campaign with a home fixture against Waterhouse in match week one.
