CITRINE DIXON, principal of Mona Preparatory School, said this year’s staging of the Mona Prep Invitational Track & Field Meet will carry special significance as it coincides with the school’s 60th year anniversary.
The annual meet is entering its 20th staging on May 31 at the Jamaica College (JC) Ashenheim Stadium.
Dixon, while speaking with The Gleaner yesterday at the event’s press launch, explained the track meet will be one of several events used to commemorate the school’s milestone.
“Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as Mona Preparatory School presents the 2025 edition of our prestigious invitational track meet. This event stands as a celebration of athletic excellence, team work and the vibrant spirit of youth sports,” Dixon said.
“The school community is very excited about our 60th anniversary. We have done a number of activities for our anniversary and we have our banquet coming up.
“For the children, it has been so beautiful. They have their painting competition coming up and now also, we have the invitational track meet to add to the excitement,” she explained.
Dixon explained one of the major source of excitement behind the track meet has been the presence of the various members of the school’s community who have been helping in the event’s staging.
She pointed to the support of the school’s alumni, students, parents and their various sponsors for the help in bringing the event to life.
“We have our past students, our foundation, our parents, our PTA – everybody really – who are on board to celebrate our 60th anniversary and our invitational meet,
“We’re looking forward to having a fabulous day and I know that Mona Prep will do well on that day.”
Alfred Nelson, the head of sports at Mona Prep, said along with the track meet and the celebration of special milestones, the invitational is also important on the school’s calendar.
He explained the Mona Invitationals stand as the final track meet before the start of the Jamaica Independent School Association (JISA) Prep School Championships.
“It is very important because this is a remarkable milestone. It is the 20th anniversary of the track meet and the 60th for the school,” Nelson said.
“It is also important because it is the final meet before the inter-prep so we try to mimic the inter-Prep schedule as much as we can to create a quality meet.”
The track meet will begin at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 6 p.m.
While Nelson could not confirm the final number of entrants because the registration period is still open, he expects more than 25 schools to compete.
