Mondo Duplantis is Larueus Sportsman of the Year

World and Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis claimed one of the biggest prizes in sport by winning the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award.

The Swedish superstar was presented with the accolade at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid in a ceremony that brought together the greatest athletes not only of the past 12 months, but of the 21st Century.

It was fourth time lucky for Duplantis, who had been nominated for this award for the past three years.

He now joins Jamaican megastar Usain Bolt as the only track-and-field athletes to win this award, Bolt won it four times.

The 25 year old Duplantis has a superb 2024 season winning his second world indoor title in Glasgow before going on to win Olympic gold in Paris with a world record clearance.

He then broke the world record again at the Silesia Diamond League meeting the following month.

US gymnast Simone Biles won her fourth Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award.

The awards are voted on by the 69 world-class athletes of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
