Monty Alexander Returns to Birdland This September

1 month ago 2

New York’s jazz fans are in for a treat this September as one of the world’s most celebrated pianists, the Hon. Dr. Monty Alexander, C.D., O.J., makes his return to the legendary Birdland Jazz Club, a venue he calls his “adopted hometown stage.”

The Grammy-nominated virtuoso, renowned worldwide for fusing the soul of Jamaica with the improvisational fire of jazz, will headline a five-night residency from Tuesday, September 16 through Saturday, September 20, at Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, New York, NY 10036. He will be joined by bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Jason Brown, with showtimes at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday, and 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Alexander’s artistry has been captivating audiences for more than six decades. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he began recording as a teenager before moving to the United States in the early 1960s. By 19, he was already making waves in New York City, performing at Jilly’s, the famed nightclub owned by Frank Sinatra’s confidant, Jilly Rizzo. Since then, his music has bridged cultures by weaving together the rhythms of reggae and calypso with the swing of the American songbook, the soul of the blues, the reverence of gospel, and the inventiveness of bebop. His motto, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm,” continues to define his electrifying performances.

With more than 75 albums to his credit, Alexander’s influence is firmly established. He was ranked fifth in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing) and has graced every major jazz festival and concert stage around the globe. His homeland has also recognized his achievements, awarding him the Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000, the Order of Jamaica in 2022, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies in 2018. His most recent album, D-Day, recorded with Sellick and Brown, earned multiple “Best of the Year” honors in France.

Birdland, known as “The Jazz Corner of the World,” is the perfect stage for Alexander’s magic. His shows there are more than performances — they are homecomings that attract loyal fans, first-time listeners, and fellow musicians eager to experience his storytelling through music.

Tickets for Monty Alexander’s September residency are available now at birdlandjazz.com, and early booking is strongly encouraged due to limited seating and high demand.
