Motorcyclist Dies After Collision on Southern Highway

A fifty-nine-year-old motorcyclist died on Saturday following a collision at the junction of Red Bank Road and the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway.  The victim has been identified as Nery Campbell, a Guatemalan labourer residing in Red Bank Village.  Independence Police responded to the area at approximately ten-forty-five Saturday morning. Upon arrival, officers saw a grey Toyota Tundra pickup truck parked at the junction and a black motorcycle without a licence plate near the edge of the road.  The victim was found lying beside the motorcycle with injuries to his right arm and leg. Police say he complained of pain throughout his body and was bleeding from the mouth. ASP Stacy Smith spoke on the initial findings.

ASP Stacy Smith, Belize Police Department: “Police have issued a notice of intended prosecution in connection with a traffic accident which resulted in the death of 59 year old Neri Campbell of Red Bank Village. What the investigation has so far suggested is that at around 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, 5th September, Campbell was traveling on a Milieun brand motorcycle and when he turned onto an unnamed road in Red Bank Village, a collision occurred between the motorcycle and an pickup truck being driven by the female who is the subject of the notice of intended prosecution. Mr. Campbell received injuries and he was transported for medical attention however he succumbed whilst undergoing treatment at around 1 am.”

Our newsroom understands that an initial investigation indicates that Campbell was travelling south along the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway when he attempted to turn right onto Red Bank Road. His motorcycle then collided with the right front section of the pickup truck, which was being driven by thirty-year-old Deidra Jackson of Silk Grass Village.  Cambel was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he died while undergoing surgery. He was pronounced dead shortly after one o’clock that afternoon.  Jackson was detained pending further investigation, and a urine specimen was obtained from her./
