MOUNT PLEASANT Football Academy (MPFA) have appointed former Charlton Athletic CEO and Sunderland Executive Director Charlie Methven as the club’s new managing director.

Mount Pleasant announced the change yesterday in a press release, where the club’s owner, Peter Gould, welcomed Methven’s arrival to club.

Gould said his appointment represents a major step towards the club’s goal of developing talent in the Caribbean region.

“Over the last six years, we have been continually improving and professionalising as a football organisation,” Gould said.

“The appointment of Charlie Methven, an experienced international sports executive, is the latest step in MPFA’s journey towards achieving our aims, particularly in terms of developing pathways for our young players and in the commercialisation of what we do.”

Methven brings to the club a wealth of experience as a sports administrator.

The English public relations consultant and journalist served as an executive director for Sunderland from 2018 to 2019.

He would then serve as the CEO of Charlton Athletic from 2022, eventually announcing he would step down from the role in March.

Just last year, Mount Pleasant and Charlton Athletic had signed a memorandum of understanding to help develop both teams’ academies.

Methven said he is excited about the new role and believes his work with Mount Pleasant promises to produce much success.

“I am extremely excited to take up this appointment. Mount Pleasant is a visionary project and has so much potential, which I look forward to helping to realise in coming months and years,” Methven said upon his arrival.

“An astounding amount has already been achieved, and my role is to assist the strong leadership team in taking things to the next level.”

Mount Pleasant’s sporting director, Paul Christie, also welcomed Methven’s appointment as he believes it underscores the club’s commitment to their goals.

“Having Charlie Methven at MPFA again shows our commitment to excellence,” Christie said.

“He will not doubt add a wealth of experience to the executive team and help shape the future of this magnificent club.”

Mount Pleasant will soon turn their attention to the Jamaica Premier League semi-finals which gets under way this Thursday at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex.
