Western St. Mary MP, the JLP’s Robert Montague, has unveiled a raft of plans for the constituency, as he seeks to fend off a strong challenge from the PNP’s Omar Woodbine.
The JLP chairman is seeking a third term at the helm of the traditional weathervane seat.
It’s voted for the winning party in at least four of the last five general elections.
Now facing serious political headwinds, Montague is seeking to shore up his support across the constituency.
Colliecia Wright reports.
Montague took to the stage sometime after nine Wednesday night, after an all-day tour of his constituency.
He was accompanied by JLP leader and Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness.
After thanking his loyal supporters, the West St. Mary MP spent time laying out his plans for the third term in office.
Skills training, housing, healthcare, water and infrastructure development are at the top of his list.
Mr. Montague says he intends to expand the number of training centres in the constituency for young people.
In a sign of Montague’s increasing vulnerability in the seat, several JLP bigwigs took to the platform to endorse the man they call chairman and appeal to Labourites to stick with him.
Among them were Cabinet Ministers, Matthew Samuda and Robert Morgan. JLP veteran Everald Warmington was also on hand to show support for Montague.
Montague announced that over 2,000 job opportunities will be available at the coming Boscobel Integrated Business Centre.
On the issue of healthcare, Montague narrowed his focus to the health centres.
The Western St. Mary MP also told his supporters that plans are underway to launch housing developments across Decoy, Salisbury and Galina.
Montague’s plans come at a time when an increasing sentiment among his constituents is that he has not advanced any major initiatives over his two terms as Member of Parliament.
That’s a view the JLP chairman is hoping to change.
In the meantime, Mr Montague says almost 50 residents in Mason Hall have signed up for water supply from the National Water Commission.
This, after a project to bring water to the community was commissioned by the government in January.
