The government’s amendment to the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act, 2022, has sparked heated debate between Dancehall entertainer Mr. Vegas and selector Foota Hype.
The amendment makes replicas and prop guns illegal, meaning toy guns, water guns, and even props used in music videos and films are now banned. Offenders can face the same penalty as someone found with a real firearm up to 15 years in prison.
During a recent live, Foota Hype criticized the move, suggesting it could create opportunities for corruption and extra-judicial killings by police.
On the other hand, Mr. Vegas supported the amendment, emphasizing safety in light of Jamaica’s rising gun violence.
The debate follows the recent mass shooting in Linstead, where 9 people were shot and five died, including a child.
