Government Minister Kareem Musa says he sees no issue with Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar-Panton meeting with British billionaire Lord Michael Ashcroft, pushing back against claims that such engagements are improper or politically troubling. Musa made the comments amid renewed public discussion over meetings between political figures and Ashcroft, a long-standing and influential investor in Belize, particularly in the telecommunications, banking, and tourism sectors. Speaking on the matter, Musa emphasized that dialogue with major investors, regardless of political affiliation, is neither unusual nor inappropriate, noting that engagement does not automatically translate into political alignment or endorsement. Musa says he himself has, on occasion, met with Lord Ashcroft, stressing that such meetings are part of governance and responsible leadership.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Immigration: “She has all right to meet with Lord Ashcroft. I at times meet with Mr. Ashcroft as well. Other leaders in the country meet with Mr. Ashcroft and so I don’t find any big issue with that.”
Opposition Leader Panton took some heat yesterday after the news surfaced that she had a private meeting with Lord Ashcroft on his yacht in Belize City. According to Panton, the meeting was to make it clear that the UDP was not supporting the proposed acquisition plan by Belize Telemedia Limited.
