Looking ahead, the Ministry is also preparing to introduce a nationwide cashless payment system in partnership with Digi. Under the proposed system, commuters will be able to use a transport card to tap and pay when boarding buses. Zabaneh says the technology is expected to improve revenue capture and operational transparency across the network. Minister Zabaneh also spoke about the employees of the National Bus Company who have begun transitioning to the new system.

Dr. Louis Zabaneh , Minister of Transport: “Most of the people employed right now who are now transitioning to being employees of National Bus Company were employees of those particular operators. They know the business and from the past couple of days I must tell you I see them working very hard. This is a business that requires you to be up from three in the morning until ten, eleven at night in terms of the schedules that we have and I’ve seen them over the past couple of days, work that is really something that will make sure that we have this profitability and sustainability safeguarded.”
The Ministry of Transportation says it will continue consultations with remaining operators as the National Bus Company expands in the months ahead.
