Fans at day one of the Miami Grand Slam Track (GST) were treated to one of the fastest women’s 100 metres hurdles races of all time as Olympic champion Masai Russell set a new US national record and the second-fastest time ever when she stopped the clock in 12.17 seconds yesterday at the Ansin Sports Complex.
Russell’s mark erased the previous US record of 12.20 set by Kendra Harrison in 2016 and sees Russell moving up to second on the all-time list.
She was five-hundredths of a second shy of Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan world record of 12.12 which was set in 2022.
Russell was not the only top competitor in the race as Tia Jones of the US also dipped below Harrison’s previous national record as she finished second in 12.19, moving her to third on the all-time list.
Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent rounded off the top three positions as she crossed the line in a season’s best 12.34
Megan Tapper finished fifth in 12.50, also a season’s best.
After a brilliant start in the men’s 400m hurdles, Roshawn Clarke would eventually register a DNF (did not finish) as he pulled up after clearing the fourth hurdle.
Brazilian Alison dos Santos won his third-straight GST race when he clocked 47.97 with Chris Robinson of the US second, 48.92, and Jamaica’s Malik-James King third in 49.43.
NEW WORLD LEAD
Trinidadian sprinter Jareem Richards took charge in the men’s 200m as he crossed the line in a blistering 19.86 to set a new world leading time.
Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic was second in an identical time, breaking the second national record of the afternoon.
Ogando bettered his own national record of 19.91 which he had set in 2022 at the Eugene World Championships.
Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce and Stacey-Ann Williams placed fifth and sixth respectively in the women’s 400m to round out the final Jamaican athletes on the day. Pryce stopped the clock in 50.71, just ahead of the Williams in 50.76.
Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino took the win in 49.21, just edging out Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain in 49.33.
The Miami Grand Slam continues today with top Jamaican athletes Oblique Seville and Ackeem Blake expected to set the track ablaze in the men’s short sprints race group.
