The National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) has appointed Surujdeo Mangaroo HBM (Gold) as its new president, following the death of Senator Deoroop Teemal on August 3.
In a press release, the NCIC said Mangaroo, who has served the organisation for nearly 30 years, will build on Teemal’s work by advancing youth development and enhancing cultural awareness. His plans include empowering young people to embrace and celebrate their heritage to ensure Indian traditions continue to thrive.
Mangaroo is also Charter President of the Rotary Club of Penal, Chairman of Cultural Affairs at the Hindi Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago Inc., and Vice President of the Global Indian Organization (GIO) Caribbean Region. From 2010 to 2015, he served as Chairman of the National Commission for Self Help Ltd.
Teemal, 69, died at his St Augustine home after a brief illness. He had been actively involved with the NCIC for more than two decades, serving multiple terms as Chairman of the Divali Nagar celebrations. The NCIC said it looks forward to a new chapter under Mangaroo’s leadership, promoting unity, education and cultural pride.
