With just weeks to go before the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season on June 1, emergency personnel are already mobilizing across the country, carrying out critical assessments of hurricane shelters to ensure Belize is ready. Teams from the National Emergency Management Organization, NEMO, have been conducting nationwide rounds, visiting designated shelters to evaluate their structural integrity, sanitation facilities, accessibility, and overall readiness to accommodate residents in the event of a storm. Minister responsible for NEMO, Henry Charles Usher, says the inspections are a key part of the country’s early preparedness strategy, allowing authorities to identify and address any gaps well ahead of the season.
The annual exercise also involves coordination with local authorities, school managers, and community leaders, many of whom oversee shelters within their districts. Officials are paying close attention to capacity limits, emergency supplies, and the condition of critical infrastructure such as roofs, water systems, and backup power. The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially opens on June 1 and runs through November 30. NEMO is encouraging residents to begin their own preparations early, including reviewing family emergency plans and ensuring access to essential supplies, as the country moves into another potentially active season
