The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development and Local Government, in collaboration with UNICEF, today officially inaugurated a new Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, W.A.S.H. Project at the Bella Vista Polyclinic in the Toledo District. The initiative forms part of UNICEF’s broader mission to expand access to clean water, reliable sanitation and improved hygiene practices, particularly to protect children from infectious diseases. For the Ministry, the project represents another step in strengthening public health infrastructure in rural Belize. The upgraded system at the Bella Vista Polyclinic includes the installation of two ten-thousand-liter water tanks, the construction of a reinforced elevated concrete stand, and the addition of a new laundry room. Ceo Valentino Shal noted that the improvements are designed to provide a critical backup water supply so the facility can remain fully operational even during interruptions to the main water system.
Today’s ceremony was attended by Minister of Rural Transformation Oscar Requena, Area Representative for Toledo East Dr. Osmond Martinez, and UNICEF Health and Nutrition Specialist Dr. Olusola Oladeji. Also present were members of the Bella Vista Village Council and Water Board, and staff of the polyclinic. Officials say the investment will help ensure that healthcare providers in Bella Vista can continue delivering essential services in a safe and sanitary environment, while advancing the government’s broader commitment to sustainable development and improved quality of life in rural communities.
