HALF-CENTURIES FROM David Dewar, Demarco Scott and Michael Clarke put Excelsior High School in a dominant position on the first day of the ISSA Grace Shield cricket final at Sabina Park yesterday.

Ending on 337 all out, Excelsior then took the ball and benefited from the bowling of Scott to leave the St Jago first innings in tatters at 133 for eight.

Bolstered by a 112-run opening partnership between Dewar, 59, and Jamare Daley, 41, Excelsior were on the front foot early.

The partnership was at a healthy clip as well with Dewar scoring his runs from just 51 deliveries and Daley not being a slouch either, scoring his 41 from just 53.

The innings would slow ever so slightly with Scott at the crease, the Excelsior number three scoring his 65 rom 76 deliveries, although Clarke, who smashed 73, only took 42 balls to do it.

In response, St Jago struggled from the start with only Lindale Anderson, 25, getting a start at the top of the order.

Batting at number 5, Milton Luckain added some much-needed respectability to the innings, scoring 51 against Scott’s figures of 3-40 from 14.3 overs.

Uunfortunately for Luckain, his was the last wicket to fall at the close.

Tamarie Redwood, 2-29, Malik Miller, 1-18, and Cavan Malcolm 1-12, also chipped in for Excelsior.

St Jago will begin day two with Akeem Richards at the crease on one, while his partner, either Rajiv Bacchus or Syeme Bryan, yet to walk out.
