The administration of the National Health Insurance (NHI) has strongly rejected attempts to link its procurement and contracting processes to the murder of Belmopan physician Dr. Naun Bonilla. NHI says recent reports and social media commentary suggesting a connection between the ongoing murder investigation and NHI contracts are inaccurate, unfounded, and misleading. Via a statement earlier today, NHI explained that as part of its nationwide expansion program, the Cayo District is the final district being incorporated into the health insurance scheme. The agency noted that a public tender process was launched in February 2025, inviting healthcare providers to submit expressions of interest to participate in the program. Among the applicants was Belmopan Medical Laboratory Services. According to NHI, contracts with successful primary care providers were signed in February of this year, followed by a three-month preparation period during which clinics were expected to recruit staff and prepare to begin offering services by the end of June. During negotiations with support service providers, including laboratories, pharmacies, and imaging centers, NHI says it became aware of an ongoing business dispute between the co-owners of Belmopan Medical Laboratory Services. As a result, both parties were informed that no contract would be signed with the entity while the legal dispute remained unresolved. NHI emphasized that no contract has been signed or executed between the National Health Insurance program and Belmopan Medical Laboratory Services. NHI is urging members of the public, media houses, and stakeholders to rely on verified information when reporting on matters involving the organization and its operations.
