Nicaraguan Labourer Charged With Murder In Stann Creek Chopping Death

Police have formally charged a man in connection with the fatal chopping death of a Stann Creek resident earlier this week.  Authorities report that earlier today, police arrested and charged 37-year-old Raul Sergio Flores Iden, a Nicaraguan labourer of San Juan Village in the Stann Creek District, for the murder of Elias Adelmo Bejerano.  Bejerano was killed on Sunday, March 1, in Cowpen Village, Stann Creek District, in what police initially described as a violent chopping incident.  Earlier this week, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, had confirmed that investigators had detained a suspect following the fatal attack.  Initial police investigations revealed that Bejerano had been walking home from a bar in the area when he was allegedly attacked by a man armed with a machete. He sustained multiple chop wounds during the assault.  Bejerano was transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.  Following further investigation, police moved to formally charge Flores Iden with murder in connection with the killing.  The accused is expected to be arraigned before the court later this week.
