Contrary to claims circulating on social media, no salary increases have been granted to the Belize City Mayor or City Councilors, Love News has confirmed. Love News understands that while the Belize City Council has been lobbying for a salary adjustment since last year, including the submission of a concept paper to central government, the proposal was not approved, and existing salary scales remain unchanged. Love News understands that to date, Mayor Wagner receives seven thousand eight hundred dollars monthly inclusive of allowances. This is notably lower than the remuneration of the San Pedro Town Mayor, for example, who earns approximately eleven thousand dollars per month. At the councilor level, Belize City Councilors earn two thousand eight hundred per month inclusive of allowances. Meanwhile, those in San Pedro, receive an estimated four thousand four hundred dollars plus allowances. Speaking with Love News, one Belize City councilor acknowledged that the disparity in compensation between municipalities is substantial, particularly given the scale, complexity, and demands of administering Belize City. The councilor suggested that the issue warrants further review and rectification. For now, however, we can confirm that no adjustments have been made, and the salaries of the Belize City Mayor and Councilors remain unchanged, for now.
