NTUCB gives preliminary response to GoB on demands

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) says none of its eleven demands was accepted in the form presented to the Briceño administration. The NTUCB issued a statement today acknowledging receipt of the Prime Minister’s response, which it says was delivered eighteen days after its August 28 deadline.  According to the Congress, several of its demands were overlooked entirely. The union body also challenged the Government’s position that organized labour already has representation on the Belize Telemedia Limited board.  The NTUCB argues that the existing union-linked seat does not reflect the type of representation it requested and does not address what it describes as the Government’s ability to act through its own appointees.  Before issuing a full written response, the Congress says it will consult its council, affiliated unions, the Joint Social Partners and other stakeholders willing to offer input. Those consultations are reportedly already underway.  The NTUCB says it remains committed to the principles outlined in its August letter. It has not indicated when its full response will be released or what further action may follow.
