Ocho Rios break Russian hearts

A MASTERCLASS from Ocho Rios High School, ended the ISSA daCosta Cup season for former champions Rusea’s High School yesterday at the Collin Miller Sport Complex in Lucea yesterday.

Ocho Rios ran out 3-1 winners, shattering the Russians’ dreams of a place in the round of 16.

Maggotty High will join the unbeaten Ocho Rios from Group 2 in the round of 16 after defeating Petersfield 4-0 yesterday. Ocho Rios sit on nine points with Maggotty on six, Rusea’s on three, and Petersfield on zero.

Interestingly, Rusea’s started the brighter of the teams, opening the scoring in the 17th minute through Roshawn Dillion.

But conceding did not sit well with Ocho Rios, who went in search of an equaliser and got it in the 44th minute off the head of Dario James.

There was no turning back after that, as Kaneil Brown notched a second-half brace, scoring in the 52nd and 75th minutes of play.

Head coach of Ocho Rios, Veron Peterkin, said the team came into the game unfazed by their opponents, long a household name in schoolboy football.

“I am just happy we beat a historic team at their home,” Peterkin said.

“We wanted to keep a clean sheet but we had a scrappy start. Rusea’s got a goal, so we kept it tight, took our time, and settled the game,” added Peterkin.

Meanwhile, Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis said the team performed well but struggled with missed opportunities.

“We started very well in the first 15 minutes. I think we should have two to three nil, because we had the Ocho Rios team flat,” said Davis.

“We scored but, when you keep missing simple chances like this against a quality team, you will get hurt, and that is what happened today.

“We have to heal these guys because, right now, they are hurt,” added Davis.

In Group 1, Cornwall College hammered Cedric Titus 13-1 to advance to the round of 16. The other game in the group between Frome Technical and Kemps Hill High was postponed owing to a waterlogged field.

McGrath High’s 3-0 victory over William Knibb pushed them to nine points in Group 8. Despite the defeat, William Knibb squeezed into the round of 16 on four points, after the other Group 8 game between Morant Bay and Central ended in a 2-2 draw. The result left Morant Bay on two points and Central on a point.
