One Detained, Rifle Seized in Alfred Mahler Shooting Investigation

Police have detained one person in connection with yesterday afternoon’s shooting of Alfred Mahler in the Maya Ranch area of western Belize.  Investigators say Mahler and another man were inspecting land between one and one-thirty when a grey pickup approached them. The men later drove onto Pine Ridge Road, where a red pickup reportedly followed them. Shots were fired, and Mahler was wounded. The red pickup fled the area.  Police have seized a licensed point-two-two-three semi-automatic rifle from the person detained. Mahler remains under medical care. Police have not released further details about what led to the shooting.
