Only Official Equipment Issued by EOJ Will Verify Voters

The Electoral Commission says no integrity lamp outside of the official equipment it issues will be used to verify electors.

It says only the Presiding Officer appointed by the Electoral Office is authorized to verify voter IDs.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ECJ said only specified equipment, under the control of the Presiding Officer, is legally allowed in the vicinity of polling stations.

No other person, including indoor agents, has the authority to carry out this verification.

The EOJ is reminding all registered political parties of the laws that govern procedures which apply to operations at polling stations.

And Director of Elections, Glasspole Brown, says seven constituencies across Kingston and St. Andrew and St. Catherine will use the Electronic Voter Identification System, EVIS, to verify electors.

With EVIS, registered electors will be identified using their biometric data.

EVIS is aimed at preventing impersonation of an elector, multiple voting by persons and the use of unauthenticated ballots.
