Workers at Excellence Oyster Bay in Falmouth, Trelawny, have taken steps to secure trade union representation with the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, BITU.
The workers have formally filed a claim for representational rights.
In a statement on Thursday, the workers say this move follows a significant increase in employee enrolment with the union, spurred by longstanding concerns over wages, working conditions, and unmet promises from their employer, Bush Quay West Limited.
BITU vice-president Rudolph Thomas highlighted that the union has maintained close contact with employees since October 2024.
He says at that time a substantial number of workers staged a strike in protest of poor labour conditions.
Thomas says assurances made by the employer to address their grievances, many of these commitments have reportedly not been fulfilled.
As a result, workers now believe that trade union representation is the most effective way to secure permanent improvements.
The BITU has formally informed Bush Quay West Limited’s management that a majority of its employees support collective representation.
