Mervyn Joseph, 33, of Rochard Road, Penal, was fined $10,000 or sentenced to 24 months hard labour after pleading guilty to a charge of larceny during a hearing at the Siparia 2nd Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

In addition to the fine, Joseph was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s permit for three years, effective August 11, 2025, ordered to return his driver’s permit to the Licensing Authority, and issued a six-month Traffic Accident (TA) endorsement.

The charge relates to a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on August 8, 2025, around 7:10 p.m. on Rochard Road, near Platanite Trace, Penal. Joseph, driving a white Kia K2700, struck two pedestrians; one died on impact while the other was rushed to hospital for medical treatment. Investigations conducted by Ag/Sgt Monsegue led to Joseph’s arrest as the driver involved in the incident.

The case was heard before His Worship Magistrate Alexander Prince, where Joseph admitted to the offence.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) reminded motorists of the severe dangers and consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and urged the public to act responsibly to ensure road safety. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
