Trincity/Maloney Member of Parliament Camille Robinson-Regis is reportedly recovering following a recent medical procedure, though she has yet to return to full health.
Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles provided an update on her condition yesterday, saying, “I think it would have been a couple days ago she indicated that she’s improving. She’s not yet 100 per cent.”
Beckles added that the opposition is prepared to provide support in her absence.
“I know for sure if the honorable member believes that it is necessary for us to assist, we will. I mean, we have put in place coordinators in a number of constituencies where you don’t have sitting members of parliament. So, if that need arises, I mean, there are several sister constituencies and I’m sure that we will put that in place.”
Former prime minister and Port of Spain North/St Ann’s West MP Stuart Young echoed her sentiment, noting that constituencies can continue to function in the MPs’ temporary absence.
“With all of us as MPs, we all have infrastructure in place that our constituents are serviced all of the time. And I know that MP Robinson-Regis is in constant contact with her office and as the opposition leader said, in contact with the opposition leader and a number of us. If the need arises, which I doubt it will, we will step in and assist,” he said.
Robinson-Regis first broke her silence on August 19, with reports indicating she had undergone major surgery which resulted in some complications. She has not attended PNM meetings, general council meetings, or other political functions since then.
