JAMAICA COMPLETED an unbeaten campaign to claim the Concacaf Boys’ U15 Championships League B title yesterday when they defeated Puerto Rico 2-0 at the Guillermo Prospero Trinidad Stadium in Aruba.
Tevin Savage (second minute) and Kelvin Brown (70th) scored the vital goals for Jamaica which saw them lifting the division title.
It was a keenly contested game, with both teams having their fair share of opportunities in front of goal.
Like they had done for much of the tournament, the young Boyz were quick off the mark, opening the scoring within the first five minutes with their first shot of the game.
A show of brilliant hold-up play from Kelvin Brown allowed him to slip in Savage who then beat the goalkeeper at his near post with a one-time low-driven effort.
Savage came close to his second in the first half, once again combining with Brown inside the box, but sliced his final effort wide of the mark.
Puerto Rico would force a save from Jamaican custodian Jaheime Gray, who had to dive full stretch to deny Luis Rodriguez’s shot at goal.
Davion Clarke proved dangerous throughout his time on the pitch, and his best effort came in the 45th minute when he let loose a knuckle ball that flew just inches high of the crossbar.
Jamaica came close again in the 68th minute when Puerto Rican goalkeeper Martin Perez left his line, leaving the goal gaping.
However, the young Boyz failed to capitalise as substitute Carlondo Morris, feeling the pressure from scrambling defenders, missed the target.
Kevaughn Halloway would be the next Jamaican attacker to find himself without much luck just a minute later.
Running on to a loose ball outside the box, Halloway let loose a volley that was tipped around the post by the diving Perez.
Jamaica’s search for their second goal would come to end in the final minutes of the game when Brown, who proved a nuisance all game, headed home a delivery from Kyle Hussey.
The result sees Jamaica taking home the League B title, while Trinidad and Tobago finished third by edging 10-man Guatemala 1-0 in the third-place play-off earlier in the afternoon.
The victory also marked progress for the under-15s and head coach Andrew Peart, with several of the players also members of Jamaica’s squad which claimed the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U15 Boyz Challenge Series title last year.
