PIOJ Anticipates Increased Growth For Third Quarter

4 days ago 12

The Planning Institute of Jamaica, PIOJ, is anticipating a boost in growth in the July to September quarter due to improvements in key industries alongside general election activity.

PIOJ Director General, Dr. Wayne Henry, says mining is expected to pick up in the quarter after having suffered serious setbacks over the last year.

The Mining and quarrying sector declined by 3.5 percent for the quarter ending in June compared to a similar period in 2024.

Overall, the economy is anticipated to have grown by 1.4 percent for the second quarter despite the downturn in mining.

While the tourism sector recorded an increase of 2.5 percent for the period, the PIOJ expects a better turnout for the third quarter due to an increase in stopover arrivals.

Overall, based on preliminary data the PIOJ expects a GDP increase for the July to September quarter of two to three percent.
