FORMER ASSISTANT coach at Racing United Donovan Lofters explained that while it was a tough decision to leave the Jamaica Premier League newcomers to take up another coaching role at Vere Phoenix United, he viewed the move as an opportunity for growth.
“Personally, it wasn’t an easy decision based on the bond that was formed with the players. It was like a big brother or uncle relationship, so it wasn’t easy in that sense. However, from a business standpoint, it wasn’t hard because I’m looking at not only developing players at Vere Phoenix United but myself with the exposure that I’ll be getting,” he stated.
The experienced coach suggested that the possibility of working with international players and managers throughout his tenure at the club provided an offer he couldn’t resist. He added that part of his role would include assisting in the development of the players in order to secure more overseas opportunities.
“Vere Phoenix is connected to a lot of overseas-based clubs. Therefore, I’ll now get the opportunity to gain experiences abroad and see how the other coaches handle their business in terms of the professional aspect. It’s also about the possibility of what can happen to me being at Vere United and understand why our players aren’t in places like Brazil and Belgium,” he revealed.
He added that he would also be tasked with post-trial assessments in a bid to help unsuccessful players work on their craft.
“When a player goes on trial and fails, I’ll have to understand why they fail and what they need to do in order to be successful in their profession as one of three head coaches at the club,” he said.
Lofters, who also coaches at the Manning Cup level with St Catherine, further shared that one of his strengths is his ability to nurture, which he believes will be a much-welcomed asset to the Vere Phoenix United family.
“I’ve always been called a player’s coach. It’s about seeing a player develop while you’re coaching them. It’s a holistic approach for me, and it’s also a way for me to save lives and encourage players to see the best in themselves.”
