Prime Minister John Briceño has acknowledged that he has not been keeping up with regular medical checkups as consistently as he should, even as he continues to lead the country during his administration’s second consecutive term in office. The prime minister made the disclosure on Friday when he was questioned by Love News about his current health and whether he remains in good condition to continue managing the responsibilities of national leadership. In his response, Briceño admitted that routine medical visits have not always been part of his schedule but reassured that he remains in good spirits while balancing the demands of governance. While addressing the question about his personal health, the prime minister quickly shifted the conversation to a broader national issue, healthcare access, pointing to the government’s ongoing efforts to expand the National Health Insurance program across the country.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “That’s one of the things I’m always telling myself that I have to take time, time out to go and to do a regular checkup. I’ve not done a regular checkup probably from before, before 2020. And I know my work hours is always with me and you have to find time, you have to find time. I’m not such a young man like before, so I have to be able to take care of myself. But fortunately, I am healthy. I try to do some exercises at least two, three times a week. I think I eat fairly healthy. And guess what? I’m not drinking as much Coca Cola as I used to before and drinking more juice and water. So I want to encourage everybody for us to live a healthy lifestyle. That is why we have rolled out the National Health Insurance across the country of Belize. That by before the end of this year, we’re going to have over 325,000 Belizeans, men, women and children registered in the National Health Insurance program that would make primary health care available at a minimum cost. You pay $2 per visit and the medication that you pay is just a fraction of what you pay if you go and buy it at the pharmacy. So again, I have to big up the Fu We Boledo. Boledo is also the money that we’re making from Fu We Boledo is also helping to be able to pay for this service. So let’s live healthy, let’s exercise, let’s eat healthy, let’s ease down on the soft drinks you know and drink juice, drink water and we can have a healthier and more prosperous Belize.”
